How does it work?
Composed of naturally occurring fruit and milk acids, they gently exfoliate the top layers of old skin to unveil smooth, soft and brighter skin.
What should I expect?
Your skin reaction may vary depending on the type of treatment performed as well as your skins’ sensitivity, preparation and any previous treatments you may have had. Generally, our micro-exfoliating peels are well tolerated with most people experiencing mild to moderate erythema (or redness) immediately post treatment which may persist 24-72hrs. This can be covered with makeup however we prefer that you do not apply anything to your skin on the day of your treatment. Your skin will feel smooth and may have a shiny, healthy glow for a few days. Occasionally you may experience minimal flakiness or dry skin which is easily managed with a good moisturiser and the correct aftercare. As mentioned, this is not always necessary but is a good sign and not usually of any concern for our patients. Any flakiness is usually experienced from days 3-7 post treatment.
Your expectations, potential results and expected downtime will be discussed with you in your consultation.
Lactic Acid – a good entry level treatment and suitable for all skin types.
Derived from milk acids, the lactic peel is an alpha hydroxy acid, or AHA and is now the more commonly used AHA, replacing Glycolic acid (derived from cane sugar) as it is gentler and less of a skin irritant than GA, making this treatment great for even sensitive skin. Lactic acids treatments aid to restore the skin’s natural pH and so is great for dry skin is it can increase absorption of your skincare and topical moisturisers.
Lactic acid treatments are indicated for overall rejuvenation and aid to improve skin functionality and health through gentle exfoliation at the epidermis and collagen production in the dermis.
Salicylic Acid Peels – oily, acne prone skin with comedones (white heads or black heads).
Salicylic acid is derived from the bark of the willow tree and is chemically related to aspirin. It is classed as a beta hydroxy acid, or BHA. Unlike your AHA’s (lactic and glycolic), BHA’s are less hydrophilic (or water-loving), meaning they are oil soluble and able to penetrate more deeply within the skin. They are particularly effective at dissolving the cellular “glue” that binds the superficial dead skin cells at the surface of the skin which contributes to congestion and blockage. For this reason, BHA’s are fantastic for oily, congested skin and anyone suffering comedones (white heads or black heads). With its anti-inflammatory properties salicylic acid treatments are an effective treatment for mild acne.
Pyruvic Peels – papulopustular acne, epidermal melasma, rejuvenation
Pyruvic acid is a metabolite of glucose and like BHA’s, is well absorbed in an oilier skin. It has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, both of which contribute to its success in treating acne with clinical studies proving the efficacy of Pyruvic acid in the treatment of papulopustular acne. Pyruvic peels are a fantastic adjunct treatment for treating sun damaged skin as it works at both the epidermis and dermis, stimulating collagen for an overall improvement in both skin tone and texture. Because they are so gentle, these peels are also great for the treatment of epidermal (or superficial) melasma.
Jessner Solution – moderate photodamage, epidermal melasma.
The traditional Jessner peel is the strongest of the superficial treatments and is composed of 14% salicylic acid (BHA), 14% lactic acid (AHA) and 14% Resorcinol. This treatment is generally recommended for moderate photo-damage, epidermal melasma or anyone suitable for, and willing to experience some degree of flaking of the skin post treatment. Downtime with this solution is typically 3-7 days and includes mild erythema (24-48hrs), dryness and flaking (3-7 days). Whilst it is an effective treatment for melasma, caution should be taken in darker skins when treating with Jessners. It is an excellent treatment for acne on the body such as the chest and back with little to no downtime in these areas.
